The history of establishment of Indonesia national gallery

The founding of Indonesia National Gallery (GNI) was done as one of efforts carried out to establish national culture development centre which was begun on the 1960.

While waiting for the realization of national culture of development center program (wisma seni nasional), the ministry of education and culture, Prof, Dr. Fuad Hasan, at the time initiated to organize renovation of the building to perfect its function as an art exhibition hall for department of education and culture art exhibitions and as a center for art appreciation activities. After intensive lobbying with the concerned authorities from 1995, then the national gallery of Indonesia was established on 1998 by the decision letter of the minister of development and empowerment civil service No.34/MK.WASPAN/1998, and this decision was confirmed by department of education and culture decision letter No. 099a/0.1998 then the building was dedicated the operation on may, 8. 1999.

The initial structure of the national gallery of Indonesia (department of education and culture letter No. 099a/0.1998) has been changed several times as reflecting in the document BP BUDPAR No.kep07/BPBUDPAR, which was then brought into line of the policies of the ministry of culture and tourism.

The final organizational shift was due to the administrative change of the ministry culture and tourism into the department of culture and tourism under the document km.55/OT 001/MKP/2003 and more recently, the minister of culture and tourism decision letter No. PM.41/OT.001/MKP-2006.
